The story behind
“Still Ain’t Out of Arkansas”
Nashville has a way of being a real small world. Tommy Conners is a writer on “Still Ain’t Out of Arkansas.” I met Tommy in Roswell, GA at a restaurant and music venue called, Swallow at the Hollow. I heard him play this song for the first time. Turns out, Tommy’s wife, Paige, worked at Warner Bros. Records. Paul Worley signed me to the label and Paige was Paul’s assistant. Once I realized this connection, I told Paige how much I liked the song and she got me a copy of the demo so that I could learn it.
This song was a total wild card because it wasn’t in the style of anything I’d ever sung before. It has a real casual, spoken feel to the vocal. Biff Watson produced this record. He and I recorded a rough demo of me singing the song before we recorded it for the album to make sure it was going to work. I remember Biff was like, “Huh. I really didn’t know how this one was going to sound, but it really suits you!” I was pleasantly surprised myself and glad it made the record.
